In the Midwest of the 1980s, being a Jewish girl meant trying to resolve your accidental love of ham with your desire to follow the rules and be a good kid. I Look Better in Binary tells the tales of writer Becky Pourchot’s adventures through puberty with poignancy and side-splitting humor. In a series of engaging stories, a picture unfolds of a thoughtful, creative, funny, and slightly neurotic girl who’s learning her way through the world one embarrassing experience at a time. It’s the unique, but also familiar story of growing up, facing fears, and, in the process discovering who we really are.

I have always felt that the sign of a good movie or book is that at the end, it leaves me wanting more. More in the way of wanting to know what happened to the people after the movie/book ends, what they are doing now, and most importantly, even more insight into their lives. Well, let me tell you that this book certainly meets that test.

"I Look Better in Binary" contains a series of short stories and which range from the hilarious to the insightful to the touching and very tender. Becky Pourchot has written a fresh, well crafted recollection of her youth, her interactions with her family and her experiences with friends while growing up. The story is set in Madison, WI and having lived in, or near, this city all my life I can relate very easily to the environment, her observations and the neighborhood where her book is set.

My wife is going to recommend this book for her next book club meeting and I'm positive they will enjoy it as much as I have.

Becky, please do a "I Look Better in Binary, Part Two". I can't wait to read it.

I Look Better In Binary edition by Becky M Pourchot Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I loved reading "I Look Better In Binary" by Becky Pourchot. Easily grabbed my attention from the beginning and had me laughing out loud throughout. So many stories I could relate to having also grown up in the midwest in the 1980s. Thank you for a great trip down memory lane, Ms. Pourchot!
"I Look Better in Binary" captures the zeitgeist of the author's childhood and teen years, but by telling the specific stories she touches on big themes. The short-story format is perfect for quick reads that linger with you for quite a while. Highly recommended, especially for anyone who's loved (or been!) a geek or nerd.
Parents and children who lived through the 70's and 80's will absolutely love this book, as will their children and grandchildren!
Ms. Pourchot is a rising star the likes of Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume.
Her family is warm, loving and hilarious as they bound forward through life.
She takes on difficult times, too, with affection, grace and tremendous skill.
We can't wait for the sequel!
This book was funny from the start, even the back cover had me laughing out loud. Becky writes with great detail from her quirky personal perspective and from her heart, sharing stories of her childhood in Madison WI, a Jewish family (some pretty funny experiences with synogogue and God and even what to wear to her Bat Mitzvah). I can tell you that I was surprised how good this was, all the way through, finding that I had to read some sections out loud to my partner so that he would know why I was laughing so loudly, but also hard, poignant times. I am not saying any of this because her dad, Charlie, is my first cousin. Though I am super proud of her.
Very enjoyable and well crafted book...highly recommend it to any woman with an afternoon where escape is needed....you will wish the author was your friend....
